We are based across Britain and collaborate with partners around the globe. Some detail about our UK sites is below, including ‘Information Sheets’ and some examples of the work we do there.
Daresbury Laboratory, Cheshire
The Daresbury Laboratory is the home of ASTeC accelerator science and technology, nuclear physics, technology, scientific computing and the Hartree Centre.
Our facility in Cheshire has been at the forefront of pioneering international scientific research for over fifty years. Around 300 staff continues to push the boundaries of modern science in fields such as accelerator science, bio-medicine, physics, chemistry, materials, engineering and computational science.
UK Astronomy Technology Centre, Edinburgh
The UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC) is a national centre of excellence for the development of scientific instrumentation and facilities for ground- and space-based astronomy. Our team of around 780 staff, based at the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh, have a world-class reputation for delivering innovative and capable cameras, spectrometers and even turnkey telescope systems.
Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Oxfordshire
Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is the home of the Central Laser Facility, ISIS pulsed neutron and muon source, RAL Space, Particle Physics, the Innovations Technology Centre, the Research Complex at Harwell and the Centre for Technology and Scientific Computing.
The expanding RAL in South Oxfordshire, currently home to 1,300 employees, plus visiting scientists and PhD students, hosts some of the UK’s major scientific facilities; providing a thriving and collaborative environment for research in particle physics, space science, materials, astronomy, photon science, computational and e-science, biology, biomedicine and chemistry.
Polaris House, Swindon
Polaris House is the home of our Scientific Programmes Directorate and our Strategy, Planning, and Communications Directorate.
Our headquarters is the base for about 100 staff working in areas such as science strategy and programme management as well as a range of professional, technical and support roles. It’s a large modern building set in its own grounds in Swindon, Wiltshire – right next to Swindon railway station, and with good road links.
Boulby Underground Laboratory, North Yorkshire
Boulby Laboratory, a 1100m deep underground science facility, is one of just a handful of facilities world-wide suitable for hosting deep underground science projects, such as the search for Dark Matter in the Universe, studies of cosmic rays and climate, astrobiology and life in extreme environments.
Chilbolton Observatory, Hampshire
Chilbolton Observatory is at the cutting-edge of atmospheric science, radar and radio research and astronomy.
