Careers at STFC

Our scientists and engineers are helping to put the next robotic explorer on Mars; they are deciphering the data that will help to unveil a distant black hole, and the data that will help to design a life-saving drug; they are designing new ways to tackle problems of the past and new ways to tackle problems of the future.

But it’s not just our scientists and engineers who are making an impact. There are a surprisingly wide range of different roles and careers on offer at STFC and many and varied routes into STFC if you are not from a technical or scientific background. For scientists and engineers there’s a wealth of opportunities – not just in specialist fields, but also in generalist roles and leadership positions. We’re also a major employer of technologists and IT professionals.

We recruit people at every stage of their careers. This is a place where you can focus on building your expertise in one field. Or you can look beyond your current specialism to broaden your outlook and experience. Due to the nature of our work, we don’t operate in silos – many projects involve working in multi-disciplinary teams alongside colleagues with complementary skills. Sometimes employees even cross over into a different career. There are many directions your career can take as your experience grows.

You can search our current vacancies via the buttons below but, if you can’t find a role that fits right now, you can build a profile in our Careers Portal and keep up to date with our current vacancies by clicking Apply.

“My partner and I worked as foster carers and for me working at STFC made this possible with the flexible working hours, generous annual leave, understanding, and support within the organisation of our unique circumstances where I would often need to rush home to deal with the latest crisis. Few companies give you the possibilities of such a good work life balance as STFC.”
